Many people enjoy growing plants in their homes and apartments, but have you considered taking that hobby on the road? Cultivating houseplants in your RV can help to add beauty, purify the air, lower your stress levels and give you a comforting and grounding hobby. You’ll just have to take some steps to keep those plants thriving, things that you might not have to worry about so much back at your sticks n’ bricks domicile.

Schwab’s RV World is your Alberta RV dealer, located in Leduc. Below, you’ll find some helpful tips to ensure that your RV plants grow strong and healthy to bring you joy as you travel.

1. Know Your Plants

Every plant will need different care, so it’s good to know whether your particular plant needs to be pruned every so often, what pests might infest it, how to treat those pests and whether your plant will require transplanting into another pot.

There are endless books about different types of plants and there is also the rich resource of the internet, where plant forums abound with useful information from green thumbs around the world.

2. Choose RV-Friendly Plants

Some plants simply may not thrive in an RV or they may be too challenging to care for on the road. Very large and heavy plants that grow to enormous sizes or heights may not be the best choice due to their weight and likelihood of tipping over in transit. Extremely delicate plants that can’t handle motion are another type to avoid. If you have pets or children, there are a number of plants that can be toxic if consumed; for example, cats can be poisoned by poinsettias or lilies.

Small air plants or succulents are a great choice for RVs because they’re fairly low-maintenance and they can be mounted securely to the wall in small holders. Climbing vines that you can drape around curtain rods or other fixtures in your RV can add a nice touch. Kitchen herbs like basil, oregano, mint, parsley and chives are another popular choice for RVers because they can serve the additional purpose of flavoring your meals. Hanging baskets of flowers are also easy to maintain and can be hung outside your RV when you stop.

3. Provide Sunshine

This is one of the more challenging aspects of growing plants in an RV, since your windows may not allow in enough sunlight or they may be placed in odd areas. Of course, when you’re in transit, plants will need to be secured in place to prevent them sliding or tipping over, but once you’re at your destination, you can set them outside or by a west-facing window for direct sunlight. South-facing windows may provide too much sunlight and heat.

4. Water Judiciously

Avoid watering your plants too much, but remember to water them regularly! Every plant’s watering needs are different and usually depend on the type of environment where they grow. Too much water will cause root rot and this may kill your plant. You should ensure all plants have good drainage and that standing water is disposed of.
