Winter Camping Tips

Extend your camping season all year long! Most people think because we live in a cold climate RV camping should only exist in spring, summer and fall. However, there are many campgrounds open year round who encourage winter camping. Camping in below zero temperatures could be the most fun you’ve ever had. Imagine no crowds, a peaceful snowshoe in the mountains or alone with your loved one or ones under a quiet moonlight. Let us help you get prepared with important preparation items and tips for cold weather camping.

Preparing Your RV

Keeping your RV warm can be very challenging. Make sure to check weather reports to determine amount of preparation needed. Most important part of staying warm is proper clothing and blankets. Layer up because it’s easier to shed layers than not having enough. To help keep your trailer warm here are a few tips.

Winter Camping Tips

  • Having a space heater will help your trailer stay warm and save propane. Your furnace will burn propane fast in cold weather conditions so it’s important to have a secondary heat source.
  • Slightly opening cabinets, drawers and doors will help heat your coach faster.
  • Cover anywhere you feel a draft or hot air would leak out. Roof vents are a good place to start insulating. Insulated roof vents will help prevent hot air from escaping when rising. See link for instructions
  • Cold weather will effect fridge operation. Block ventilation ports (Leave one open) from the outside ifyou plan on using your fridge. This will allow protection from wind and prevent chemicals from jelling.
  • Empty holding tanks and pour antifreeze in them. This will prevent water and other materials from completely freezing if used.
  • Remember to have and emergency kit with booster cables if anything were to happen

Although winter camping has its challenges the payoff is being able to use your RV year round and no mosquitoes. There are plenty of campsites open year round and close to cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice fishing, ski hills and more……. Check out Gorving.com for Campsite info. So get out there and enjoy!
