What is a Class A Motorhome?

Let’s start with the basics—what exactly is a Class A motorhome and why should you be interested? To define these RVs, we’ll need to break down the terminology. Motorhomes are the only non-towable RV, meaning they come with their own drivetrain so there’s no hitching process necessary. Motorhomes are such a big group, though, that they are broken down into subcategories known as classes. Class A motorhomes are distinguishable by their bus-style chassis, complete with a flat front and panoramic windshield.

Size

There are some other common similarities that are generally true for Class A motorhomes. The most well-known defining factor is their size. Class A motorhomes can easily exceed 30 feet in length and even reach up to 45 feet. They are also taller and, when you combine these things, you get tons of interior space, especially if you throw in a few slide-outs. This can make them ideal for big camping parties or campers who expect to spend a lot of time on the road.

They are also often considered some of the more luxurious campers on the market. Not only do you get more elbow room with a Class A motorhome, but you also get more amenities, more luxury features, and bigger living areas, including bathrooms and kitchens. They're ideal for people who want to experience a more comfortable, modern camping trip.

Driving

The massive size of a Class A motorhome might seem intimidating if you have never driven something that large before. However, it’s not as daunting as it sounds. The foot pedals are in different spots and the center of gravity is higher, so you’ll need to be even more careful when turning. They also use air brakes, which function a little differently from the hydraulic brakes you’re used to and won’t be able to stop quickly. In general, you’ll need to spend lots of time practicing behind the wheel before the day of your big trip.
